Art for Mankind, or Art for Money?
A Digital Art Commentary by Crosbie Fitch

Where is it written that all who enjoy art must suffer? Are there really artists out there who wouldn’t wish that their art could be enjoyed by all mankind for nothing? If an artist does a deal to produce a work of art for a particular commission, do they really begrudge anyone else who might set eyes on it who had not contributed?

If we get out of the ‘art as commodity’ mindset that copyright and commercialism has created over the years, then we might just begin to see that art is an idea, whether realized or not, something that gives the artist or other people pleasure or helps them in their life or work. Once created, and shared among people, it is difficult to destroy, albeit possible to forget. Its realization on paper or any other medium only helps to make the art persist, to contribute to the total sum of mankind’s art for all time, so that it is not forgotten. Academic research is probably one of the few cases where production of art is philanthropically sponsored, usually by the state, though that tends to express a strong interest in art that is at least potentially of theoretical or practical use to mankind (science).

The advent of the Internet is the first occasion since democracy that people have been able en masse to collectively sponsor art. Whereas before we’ve had to rely on elected governments to have some semblance of funding the arts on behalf of the people, now we can speak directly to the artist.

Amazing, but TRUE…
The Touch Screen Goes 3D -- Literally

Researchers at the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo, as well as the Japan Science and Technology Agency, aim to add an interactive third dimension to the experience of Photoelastic Touch - a table top system that employs a transparent rubber material to create a realistic touch-sensitive surface that works in concert with an LCD interface.

The Japanese S&T Agency believes that the time has come for a more participatory touch interface. Fukuchi, a head researcher for the agency states, “We have so many square-flat-solid displays in our living environment. Photoelastic Touch does not replace all of them, but it will give some an idea of how to make displays more interactive and friendly.”

Composed of an LCD outfitted with a wave-length filter and over head camera equipment, Photoelastic Touch requires a user to apply the elastic material to the LCD by pinching or pushing. When the material is moved it changes the polarization of the LCD light. This in turn changes what is being observed by the camera.

This technology is in it’s infancy, but the future of a malleable interactive surface is just over the horizon.

Where to Find Freelance Work - ONLINE

If your traditional job search is coming up empty, it’s time to scope out the many job boards available on the Internet for freelancers.

The Internet is a bonanza for freelance work, providing a never-ending stream pf project opportunities. Today, you can work for a wide variety of clients in many ways. Businesses need photographers, writers, Web designers, graphic artists and other services. Job seekers need their resumes and cover letters professionally polished. Translation roles can be a great niche is you’re multi-lingual.

Obtaining freelance work often means bidding your services against others who may be located all over the world. For projects that can be done virtually via email or the Internet, workers in Third World countries can bid at very depressed rates, which lowers what other workers can expect to get, so finding freelance work online is not an occupation to approach with the goal of getting rich quick. Building a client base is the key. Bid competitively, sell your worth and skill, and keep clients coming back for updates and new projects. In other words, build a relationship. People buy from people they get to know.

Des Kilfeather Selected for Excellence Show in UK

Three Portsmouth University MA Fine Art students selected for national postgraduate exhibition.

Atkinson Gallery has selected three postgraduate students from Portsmouth University to show their work at the MA & Other Postgraduate Contemporary Art Show 2010, in Street, Somerset. 22 February 2010 until 27 March 2010. Students from Universities around the UK were invited to compete for places at the fourteenth Atkinson show and selected students Emma Seymour, Kye Wilson and Des Kilfeather will be exhibiting alongside students from 16 art institutions including the Royal Academy Schools and the Royal College.

Ken Devine, course leader for Fine Art at Portsmouth says, “All of the Fine Art staff are delighted that three of our students were chosen for the show. They are all particularly distinctive with a strong sense purpose for their work and they do represent excellence through their diversity. This is the first time we have responded to the Atkinson call and thoroughly welcome and support the opportunity it offers.”

For Emma Seymour (contemporary embroidery and paint), Kye Wilson (video collaboration with Denise Callender and Neil Hunt) and Des Kilfeather (paint, print and photography), all MA Fine Art students, this is a very significant exposure into the art-world as Atkinson Gallery has a high profile and strong influence.

Atkinson Gallery, in its press release, says; “Featuring the works of exciting new talent from many of the major art colleges and universities throughout the UK, this visual celebration of contemporary art aims to give exposure to and promote the next generation of artists. Showcasing the work of students who express particularly fresh and innovative ideas, the exhibition challenges the norm with wildly stimulating and thought provoking art that attempts to push the boundaries and excite the viewer”.

Artists who have exhibited at Atkinson Gallery include Andy Warhol, Gillian Ayres, Bert Irvin, Anthony Caro and Lynn Chadwick, an impressive list of internationally acclaimed artists whose footsteps Emma, Kye and Des are particularly pleased to follow.

FOR DISCUSSION --Is "Random" Possible??

We use the word “random” often when describing a process, application or condition of being that is haphazard, unpredictable, or outside the norm. But I wonder, is there anything that is truly a random occurrence? We equate “mastery” to knowledge, predictability and skillful application. While randomness is considered an undisciplined approach, created purely by chance. Is it fair to argue that we simply do not know enough about ourselves and the world we live in to perceive any action, function or condition as random?

JD Jarvis kick-started the conversation for us last week and I would like to see us discuss this topic further, it's intriguing -- Your thoughts?

Computer Performance Tips:

1.) Don’t leave your computer running 24/7 -- Reboot your computer at least every other day. Leaving your computer can cause small system inefficiencies to multiply. Applications take up systems resources and don’t always let go of them when you exit the program. As the system begins to rely more on virtual memory - hard drive space (RAM)- begins to bog down. Fortunately, a simple RESTART will allow the system to let go of these lingering resources and run a bit more efficiently.

2.) Keep your hard drive healthy -- Regularly run Disk Cleanup and Defrag to get rid of junk files and make the best of your disk space. Some utility software, like Norton System-Works, helps to keep up with this effort.

3.) Compress large files -- Save image files as flattened, or compressed, to your hard drive. If you feel that it is necessary to keep the uncompressed or expanded digital file on hand, put it on the back-up hard drive or on a CD. Give your computer’s storage space some breathing room!
