"The Elements of My Thoughts Are the Alchemy of My Dreams" by Lisle Drake

Drake takes that which seems common and transforms it into something special. The art expresses the workings of an active and complex mind.

To title or not to title, that is the question...

Are you conflicted about adding a title to your artwork? Many artists create first and title the piece last. Other artists have been known to have an epiphany in the middle of the work; it would seem a title just seems to rear it’s head as the piece evolves. Then there are those few who envision a title before even beginning the process. Whatever method works best for you, remember, adding a title impacts the viewers understanding of your work -- it becomes part of the art.

Abstract art in particular can present titling challenges. One should consider very carefully whether to include a title or not. Ask yourself: “What is it that I want to say?” “Is there a sub-text that I want known or kept hidden?” It is important to consider how the proposed title might add or subtract from your message and the viewers experience. Titles offer insight into the mind-set of the artist and/or promote knowledge. They may be used to obfuscate or evoke irony. Try on several titles to determine which fits best. But use care as saying too much can lessen the impact and be distracting.

Finally, not all questions need to be answered. An element of mystery can be evocative. Leaving work untitled is an interesting way of enveloping your audience. The viewer will explore and make discoveries on their own.
