Rick Simpson received his MFA in Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Oregon. His background includes lithography, watercolor, etchings, woodcuts and oil painting. He lived in Germany for 12 years and has travelled to more than 50 countries, studying the work of modern artists and Old Masters. He is based now in Seattle, Washington.

He calls his art Fantastic Realism and thinks of his work as "intuitive," a venture in self-discovery. It is entirely digital, a mixture of metaphor, fantasy, humor, and inventions, both representational and non-objective. He says that his themes involve deeply personal and current social issues, but includes whimsical and interpretive elements from nature, both real and imagined. He disclaims meaning, averring,"The individual viewer’s vision, imagination, and experiences shape the interpretation of each image".
